This page shows how Inside the City was written, in dialogue between Laurentius Paulus and a language model (Claude), on 26 October 2026. The prompts are given in Finnish as they were written, shortened where marked with an ellipsis, with an English translation. The model’s answers are summarised, not quoted; where the model proposed something that was rejected or corrected, that is said. Practical messages about files, colours and site access are left out. Times are Helsinki time; the morning’s exchange is shown without times.
Background
The day began with an idea for an essay on the pocket calculator and turned to Revelation: could the last book of the Bible be modelled the way Genesis had been read through the threshold model? The draft was first planned as an essay and then rewritten as a Journal entry; the essay will follow.
The dialogue
“What if we open the next draft, an essay on the pocket calculator entering mathematics, or more broadly machines starting to do calculations: did mathematicians have the same worry as people have today, that AI users won’t learn to think for themselves?”
Model: outlined the history of the worry (calculators in schools, computer-assisted proofs such as the four colour theorem) and suggested where the parallel holds and where it breaks.
“Let’s take a couple more angles before structuring: what does it reveal when we treat AI as a machine rather than as language? And if AI is language that, like a calculator, can follow rules to find an answer in a text to a question set in advance…”
Model: developed the machine/language distinction and the point that texts have been read through interpretation because their structure was out of reach.
“So maybe the difference between the plausible and the necessary should come in too?”
Model: brought in Aristotle’s pair eikos / anankaion.
“Okay, now Revelation got interesting. Let’s look at it in the light of the grammar of movement, and set Genesis and Revelation side by side as we did with Romans.”
Model: drafted a side-by-side of Genesis and Revelation in seven places; later also Revelation in seven movements and beside Romans 9–11.
“Could you open those movements more, with some analogy? The serpents and beasts and Babylon don’t really speak to me :)”
Model: tried analogies; the user then proposed a present-day reading instead.
“What if we switch the analogy to the global situation and make it a reading of the present: the LLM in its own place, the system overheating, the endpoint of autonomous agency that breaks the system from inside, and so on.”
Model: wrote a present-day reading; it sounded convincing but tested nothing.
“Let’s not think about publication yet, but we can’t stay at the level of the plausible either. We have to set a condition before the reading, so that the reading holds or falls.”
Model: agreed; proposed writing conditions and failure conditions first.
“For Genesis our condition was the observation from developmental psychology, the threshold model. What is the model through which Revelation is now read? We have to name it, our pre-understanding.”
Model: searched for a model from outside the Bible.
Koneessa on vääristymä”
“…in today’s language, misalignment, and that is exactly what is already seen to become the system’s ruin. There is a distortion in the machine.”
Model: built the misalignment model from AI research (reward hacking, alignment faking, emergent misalignment) in seven steps.
10 — “ei sitä pitänyt genesiksen vaan ilmestyskirjan rinnalle..”
“It wasn’t meant to go beside Genesis but beside Revelation.”
Model: had placed the model beside Genesis by mistake; moved it beside Revelation.
“Where did it go, or don’t you see the core of the whole thing: the system collapses from within, because it is built on a distortion.”
Model: had reduced the core to one row among seven; made it the thesis.
“The Leaning Tower of Pisa comes to mind: the only reason it doesn’t fall is that it wasn’t built any higher :)”
Model: checked the tower’s history and used it as an image.
“Let’s change direction: three paragraphs per chapter, and turn it into a Journal entry. We’ll do the essay later; now we develop the thought and it may show.”
Model: began rewriting the essay draft as a first-person Journal entry.
14 · 13:04 — “…kun luen tuota tekstiä en näe siellä juurikaan merkkejä nykyisestä uutistulvasta joka polarisoi tekoälyn tuho–pelastaja-akselille.. mitä siis tuhotaan ja mitä pelastetaan jos molemmat tapahtuu samaan aikaan.. toi sun nykyinen teksti on eksegeesi jotenki.. tosi tylsä”
“…reading the text I hardly see the current news flood that polarises AI on a destroyer–saviour axis. So what is destroyed and what is saved, if both happen at once? Your text is somehow exegesis, really dull.”
Model: drew the model “Both at Once” and proposed opening from the headlines.
“The Journal is a researcher talking to himself, but aimed at someone who isn’t necessarily a researcher, so life and concreteness have to be written into it.”
Model: rewrote chapter 1 around two real headlines and the calculator.
16 · 13:16 — “…onkohan tässä vielä vanhaa tietoa.. ? adam ja yksityinen ihminen – ihmiskunta ja yksilö”
“…is there still outdated information here? Adam and the individual person: humankind and the individual.”
Model: corrected the passage: Romans 5 speaks of humankind, Romans 7 of the individual.
17 · 13:28 — “…jää kauaksi siitä selvyydestä joka oli se threshold model.. johtuuko se ainoastaan siitä, että ilmestyskirja on liian monikerroksinen ja kryptinen.. kun mä luen ‘come out of her’ niin mä kuvittelen että jotain olioita tulee ulos naisesta”
“…it is far from the clarity of the threshold model. Is it only because Revelation is too layered and cryptic? When I read “come out of her”, I imagine creatures coming out of a woman.”
Model: agreed that symbols had been quoted without translating them, and proposed one everyday example (school and the exam) to carry the text.
“I feel you’re trying to impress Bible scholars instead of writing a post an ordinary person can read.”
Model: rewrote in plain language: verse numbers, Greek and study names moved to the end.
19 · 13:32 — “tää ilmestyskirjan käsittely etenee kolmessa vaiheessa – 1. kysymyksen asettelun hahmotteleminen journalissa.. 2. essee tale-sivustolle ja visuaaliset mallit.. 3. tarjotaan julkaistavaksi”
“The work on Revelation goes in three phases: 1. sketching the question in the Journal; 2. an essay on A Tale of a New Era with visual models; 3. offered for publication.”
Model: noted that the entry should end in a hypothesis, not a result.
“…or: first name what you are looking for, so that the result depends not on hope but on what can be verified.”
Model: adopted the wording for the method sentence.
“Doesn’t Revelation speak of the system, Babylon, as a woman? That has to be said out loud, because a reader today doesn’t see it.”
Model: explained the ancient convention of cities pictured as women (Britannia, Marianne, the Finnish Maiden) before Babylon appears.
22 · 13:50 — “eikö se nainen, siis babylon synnytä jonkun lohikäärmeen siis”
“Doesn’t that woman, Babylon, give birth to some dragon?”
Model: clarified that the woman giving birth (ch. 12) and Babylon (ch. 17–18) are different figures; the text now names three women.
23 · 13:53 — “…a statue that speaks is a fair description of a chatbot. — MIKSI? mikä on se yhdistävä tekijä”
“…WHY? What is the connecting factor?”
Model: named it: made by hands, a copy of a living voice, speaking with breath given by others.
“This school thing is so good, let’s build the whole chapter on it: if society is built on rewards and individuals learn to “cheat” already at school, it continues through adulthood, at work, in research…”
Model: rewrote chapter 3 around school, work and research, and later carried the idea through the whole entry.
“Your structure is wrong: chapter 4 is the peripeteia, in the middle of the second act, as always.”
Model: moved the acts to 2 + 3 + 2 and rebuilt chapter 4 as complication, turn and pathos.
“If the turn is our foundation that has to be straightened, then now that it is, doesn’t it radiate through the whole tower?”
Model: re-read the entry from the turn and adjusted the chapters around it.
27 · 14:23 — “onko trading even people viittaus ihmisten sometietojen myyntiin vai mihin.. sun pitää olla nyt täsmällinen”
“Is “trading even people” a reference to selling people’s social media data, or what? You have to be precise now.”
Model: made it exact: the cargo list in Revelation 18 ends with slaves, “human souls”.
28 · 14:24 — “mennäänkö tuohon pisatorniin liian yksityiskohtaisesti.. se on vaan anekdootti”
“Are we going into the Pisa tower in too much detail? It’s just an anecdote.”
Model: reduced the tower to one image; dates removed.
29 · 14:29 — “…mä kuvittelin tän just toisinpäin.. että siinä kohdassa jossa tulokset on kaiken mitta.. kaupunki sortuu.. koska se on kokonaan irti perustasta”
“…I imagined it the other way round: at the point where results are the measure of everything, the city collapses, because it has come completely loose from its foundation.”
Model: agreed: cause rather than symptom; rewrote the sentence.
“…let’s no longer describe the process of how this text came about; that belongs on the dialogue page.”
Model: first removed the narrator altogether; at 14:48 the user clarified that the first person stays, only the making-of goes.
31 · 14:42 — “sit mua jotenkin häiritsee toi viimeinen luku, kummalla puolella minä olen? oliko tässä siis kysymys jostain puolten valinnasta?? kun molemmat on tässä mun työssä läsnä.. mä etsin palkintoa kyllä..”
“The last chapter bothers me: which side am I on? Was this about choosing sides? Both are present in my work; yes, I look for a reward…”
Model: dropped the choice of sides.
“So according to our model is it that simple, that an individual can stop chasing the reward and reach the goal?”
Model: agreed that a decision would only be a better stand-in; removed the self-help tone.
“The denouement tries to have the last word. It should return to chapter 1, answer the question raised there, and let the conversation go on.”
Model: rewrote the last chapter around the two headlines.
“AI speeds up the collapse of a decayed system; on the other hand it reveals the system by opening “seals”. What falls is the same thing that frees. When the engine no longer runs on the stand-in, it has to be steered in a new way.”
Model: wrote the last chapter as one event seen from two sides.
35 · 15:29 — “ja sitten viimeistely.. kaikki kappaleet samaan mittaan.. viiteen lauseeseen”
“Then the finishing: all paragraphs to the same measure, five sentences.”
Model: trimmed all 21 paragraphs to five sentences.
älä ota mun sanoja sanasta sanaan, vaan sano mun ajatus paremmin”
“…it can’t open it because it has read everything, but because it sees the structure from which all text has come about. Don’t copy my words; say my thought better.”
Model: rewrote: the model has learned the patterns our writing grows from, and the hidden logic shows through them.
